Resource Brainspotting
Resource Brainspotting strengthens and enhances internal resources and allows for contained, gentle, yet deep processing work with attachment issues and dissociative disorders. The Resource workshop focuses on the use of internal and Brainspotting Resource spots across the dissociative spectrum — from common, non-life interfering dissociation to Dissociative Identity Disorder. We will cover activating the innate, organic healing energy grid within the body, enhancing dormant neurobiological attachment processes/attunement, and identifying and connecting with core self and spiritual essence allows the power and breadth of Brainspotting to augment one’s potential to heal and be healed. I will be discussing how to find and use the following Resource Brainspots: Body Resource Brainspot, Resource Energy Constellation, Attachment Brainspot, Core-Self/Spiritual Essence Brainspot, In-Utero trauma, Empty Core, Grief Work, and Somatic Dissociation/Medical Conditions.

Brainspotting was discovered by David Grand, Ph.D. in 2003. (See “What is Brainspotting?”) He phoned me the same day that he noticed the phenomenon of profound and deep processing occurring while holding one’s eyes on a specific eye position. The eye position corresponds to the somatic activation that comes up when a client thinks about a distressing issue. He asked me to experiment with these eye positions, or brainspots, in my practice in order to validate what he had noticed in his work. I too found that internal processing was significantly deepened and much more contained than during the type of internal processing I had been doing with clients in my own practice.
While Brainspotting “took off” in both my practice and David’s, I was finding it necessary to create and develop resourcing techniques to use when Brainspotting with the particular population of clients I was primarily treating – those who suffered from severe dissociative disorders and complex PTSD.
The mechanism of Brainspotting is quite powerful and effective in down-regulating the amygdala therefore eliminating the survival freeze (and corresponding psychiatric/somatic symptoms) that hold clients in repetitive patterns of behavior and medical disease process. I came up with a variety of resourcing skills which are integrated with Brainspotting and the result was quite significant in terms of fragile, traumatized clients being able to clear their traumas without massive, intrusive, abreactions. The Resource Model that I developed (and continue to develop!) includes the use ofEnergy Constellation Brainspots, Attachment Brainspots, Core-self/Spiritual-Core Brainspots, Brainspotting In-Utero, and exploring “Empty Core” (that big, black “empty” hole that clients report they have a felt sense of internally). I have made it possible to Brainspot the most profound grief, rage, terror, conflicting feelings and pre-verbal/pre-natal memory with minimal distress through the use of the Resource Model. Therapists who treat DID clients report the ability to work with their clients in a completely different way as a result of these techniques.
In developing the Resource Model I utilized brilliant and amazing pieces of other people’s work and I would like to honor them here: David Grand, PhD; Colin Ross, M.D.; Ruby Gibson, Th.D.; Richard Schwartz, PhD.; Watkins and Watkins M.Ds, Bob Scaer, M.D.; Francine Shapiro, Ph.D.; Shirley Jean Schmitt; April Steele, and my son Jon Carr . I want to thank these folks for their innovative contributions to the world of healing– without their work mine would not have become what it is today.
